Patination is a term for the protective layer that forms over most copper-based metal items and prevents it from eroding. A certain amount of wear and tear leads to patina, especially in a piece of jewelry. So, it is understandable that some pieces be slightly distressed. In fact, it is quite rare that you'll find a piece of vintage jewelry that has not seen better days (unless it was bought and stored away by the previous owner, which is highly unlikely).
Tribal jewelry history is indeed fascinating. It had a totally different style and meaning to it than what we think of when we think of jewelry today. However, 'history' has always fascinated us, and so have our ancestors and their ways of life. I guess if they were looking down upon us, they would be proud to see the legacy they created through tribal jewelry to be still alive and cherished to this day...
Have photos of your jewelry items. This is important as it is then possible to recreate the item on the basis of a good photograph.
